Vis rushed over to Dalton, ignoring his mateâs glare and stiff body. Since meeting the shifter, this seemed to be a fairly normal greeting.
âAre you hurt?â
Dalton pushed Visâ hands away, which were busy checking for injuries. âIâm fine. Annoyed that man grabbed me and not Magnus or Titus.â
âOf course, he grabbed you.â Vis wanted to run his hands all over Daltonâs naked body to make sure his mate was truly okay then thoroughly love on him.
âWhat do you mean âof courseâ?â Dalton snapped.
âAh, Visâ¦â Finn said.
âI mean if I was going to take a hostage, Iâd definitely choose a hedgehog shifter. You wouldnât fight back, and you donât have any substantial shifter weapons.â
âFoot in mouth,â Finn muttered and, rising from his chair, stepped away and motioned Cas and the bodyguards to join him.
Confused why everyone was backing away but his attention currently on his mate, Vis ignored them. âDalton, letâs get you homeââ
âIâm not substantial?â Dalton exploded.
âWhat? Ohâ¦â Vis realized his error in wording. âThat is not what I meantââDalton jerked away from his hands and stepped backâ âmate.â
âUgh! Donât call me that.â
âIâm going to call you mate because you are my mate,â Vis said firmly. âYou were a victim and are substantially important to me. I didnât meanâ¦â
Daltonâs platinum-blond hair, which always looked a little stiff like he wore a lot of product in it, sprang up and arranged in spikes over his head. Vis was transfixed. Heâd seen the local Avengerâs sprite mateâs hair do something similar, and it meant Deakin was about to have an angry outburst or melt down.
Vis was now painfully aroused. He sensed his mateâs passion, and though disappointed it wasnât sexual, Vis was turned on. He loved Daltonâs nature, his snappiness, the depth, and contrary-at-times attitude. Right now, he wanted to open a portal and coax his mate through to the guild. There Dalton would be safe, and they could share their mate passion.
âIâm not a victim! How other people behave and what they choose to do to me or others doesnât make me a victim. It makes them pricks and completely responsible.â
âOkay, I get your point.â Vis did get it. Dalton wasnât responsible for what other people did, even when they did something to him. They were responsible for themselves and had to deal with the consequences. âLetâs go home and talk, mate.â
âYouâre so annoying!â
Daltonâs spikey hair moved all over his head before sharp pieces shot off directly toward Vis. Vis had never seen anything like it and had to duck and weave to avoid being struck.
âHoly shit! Ow, they sting.â Batting away the spikes, a few poking him in the arms, chest, and one in his forehead, he looked down in amazement at the platinum quills on the floor. âYour hair is actually quills?â
âWell, what did you expect? Iâm a freaking hedgehog shifter.â
âSo fun, right?â Finn walked over to Dalton and patted his hair.
âStop it.â Dalton batted Finnâs hands away. âYouâre messing up the oil balance.â
Chuckling, Vis crouched down and began collecting the quills.
